-
- Wow! Great... a forum on CD-ROM! Just what the doctor ordered!
-
- I'm here in Seattle right now on the last day of the MicroSoft conference, and
- I'll try to log back on later on and post some thoughts and observations, not
- to mention news from the conference. There's a lot of excitement in the air.
-
- I'm Raines Cohen of BMUG, Inc., the world's largest independent nonprofit
- Macintosh Users Group. The folks at Discovery Systems at the show told me
- about this forum, so I came over to investigate. This is my first conference
- here, but probably not the last... we announced a CD-ROM product here (I'll
- post a note about it in the next message) and we're looking at really getting
- involved in the technology.
-
- People really seem to be saying that CD-ROM is "more than a medium" --- after
- all, you don't see thousands of people flocking to annual floppy disk
- conferences! What is actually going on is far deeper... it is lots of people
- in many different fields realizing that CD-ROM and related technologies bring
- advances in storage capacity that can help make many other areas possible.
-
- I hope that this forum will help to discuss many of these new concepts and
- technologies, as well as CD-ROM itself. There's so much going on! ...

- BMUG to Produce PD ROM(tm)
-
- Seattle, WA - BMUG, Inc. announced today that it will publish a special
- anthology of its shareware library on CD ROM. This product, called the BMUG PD
- ROM(tm), will include public domain (PD) software and shareware as well as
- digests of public messages from selected electronic services. The PD ROM will
- give an individual easy access to the several hundred megabytes of software and
- information which would previously have been difficult and expensive to store
- and maintain.
-
- Through an agreement with Discovery Systems, a publisher of compact disc
- products based in Dublin, Ohio, the anthology should be available for under
- $100 retail. "We were fortunate to team up with a publisher who shares our goal
- of delivering this material to the users as inexpensively as possible, like we
- do with our floppy-disk-based library of over 150 disks available at $3 each.
- BMUG is not looking at this project as a money-maker for the group; we're
- producing the PD ROM as a public service to the community. The disc ties in
- nicely with BMUG's Registration Assistance Program ('the BMUG RAP', where we
- pay the postage and help deliver Shareware registration checks), to help both
- shareware users and authors."
-
- The PD ROM will be designed for use with Apple's today-announced CD SC compact
- disk drive and HyperCard system software. The contents of the disc have been
- drawn from a wealth of available material and will be tested and screened prior
- to publication. "I think it's great, too," said Marsh Williams of Discovery
- Systems, "the price and utility of this product make it a terrific value for
- every Mac CD ROM user."
-
- BMUG, the world's largest independent non-profit Macintosh users group, is well
- known for its excellent member services and publications. The semi-annual BMUG
- Newsletter contains over 300 pages of candid, informative articles and is
- widely read by novice users and industry leaders alike. Discovery Systems is a
- full-service publisher and manufacturer of compact disc products for
- professional audio and computer use.

- Welcome to the forum, Mark. Apple has just announced a SCSI CDROM drive for
- the Macintosh (see DLI:APCDSC), and I heard a rumor at the last Comdex that
- Commodore was pursuing CDROM drivers for the Amiga. All the major
- manufacturers now (or soon will) are delivering SCSI drives, and the Microsoft
- CDROM Extensions (which come with new drives and they are available from other
- sources, such as Discovery Systems, for people with a Philips CM100, Hitachi
- CDR1502/3, or Sony CDU100) make access to discs in High Sierra format simple.
- DEC has their RRD50 drive, and has announced support for ISO/9660 (the
- international version of High Sierra that is in the process of being adopted
- and which will be published this spring). And there's lots more...stay tuned.

- Welcome, Carlo. Right now, the "winner" in the standards area is ISO/9660 or
- High Sierra (ISO/9660 is the international version that has a few minor
- changes). Microsoft is backing it - the CDROM Extensions that are now out
- allow you to access such discs using standard I/O calls (read, open, close,
- seek), and there is a well defined interface for doing "low level" calls for
- higher performance I/O or audio control. We just released a Lattice C (for
- now) compatible toolkit for working with graphics files and audio on a CDROM.
- A (slightly outdated and to be revised this spring) version of the NISO wording
- describing the ISO/9660 format is in the data libraries. DEC has announced
- support for ISO/9660, Apple is developing a driver for High Sierra, and version
- 2 of the Microsoft drivers are due out in April or May (that version will
- handle both ISO/9660 and High Sierra - current one only handles the latter).
- Hope this helps.

- build their own databases and have only a few copies of them. For large

- Ty,
- Thanks for the reply. It sounds like things are now moving pretty fast for
- CD-Roms. I saw a whole Computer Chronicles dedicated to the subject 2-3 weeks
- ago. As I see it the key is software to make the hdwe desireable. Vertical
- market niches are fine but the whole thing will take off when really useful
- "common denominator" products appear for reasonable prices. PD software
- collections are a good example as well as the collection of writer's tools
- available.
- I plan to keep in touch with this forum to see the latest.

- I subscribe to dialog and we use the eyp's to build mailing lists. the price

- Pursuant to the initial request to identify myself and describe my interest
- in CD-ROM, I am posting this message. I am an attorney in San Francisco as
- well as a computer person/filmmaker and am thus extremely interested in the
- ability to access a large amount of data cheaply and efficiently.
- I was recently told by my Mathew Bender service representative that Mathew
- Bender is going to make many of its publications available on CD-ROM. He
- wasn't specific which system they plan to support. I am concerned that since I
- subscribe to a large part of this library in hard copy form that the price will
- be prohibitive--i.e. that they will charge for CD-ROM's a price equivilent to
- what we already have paid for the hard copy library. In such a situation, we
- won't be able to justify purchasing the CD-ROM system. CD-ROM suppliers should
- make their products available at a substantial discount to those patrons who've
- already purchased the material in hard copy form.
- CD-ROM is an exciting new technology although with the three major competing
- systems, it is a bit difficult to add a drive to my system right now. I am
- interested in finding out what material is available on CD-ROM and whether some
- of the more advanced "standards" will be able to access the older material
- published on a less advanced standard.

- Chris - I am also a lawyer, with the Los Angeles County Public Defender's
- Office, and a computer person very excited about CD- ROM. I also spent 10 yrs.
- in San Francisco and envy you for being there. What firm are you with; I don't
- happen to have Parker's Directory (an excellent candidate for CD-ROM) at home!
- I think that many of your questions could be answered by a look at any
- recent issue of the magazine CD-ROM REVIEW, put out by IDG Communications of
- Peterborough N.H. They list a West Coast Editor as Stephen L. Mickel (415)
- 528-2418. Every issue to date has a "discography" of currently available
- CD-ROMs, including titles, prices, databases and publishers. Legal material
- that I've noticed includes several volumes of the C.F.R., the Revised Statutes
- of Virginia, Attorney General Opinions (jurisdiction unspecified), and,
- enticing to me, "legal libraries by region" (ROM Publishers Inc. in Lincoln, NE
- (402) 476-2965). Interesting technical articles amid lots of ballyhoo.
- Legal publication and distribution will soon be entirely electronic, I
- believe, and much of the copyright barriers haunting other material will be
- nonexistent with public domain judicial opinions, statutes and regulations. I
- am concerned about the slow access times of CD-ROM when applied to legal
- research, and I wonder if courts, legislatures and agencies will simply
- transfer material by modem to user-owned hard disks, which are getting cheaper
- and bigger by the month. Another alternative is the use of O.C.R. scanners and
- index/retreival software on WORM drives. What did Mathew Bender tell you about
- their plans?

- I've been reading a lot about CD-ROM technology and am quite intrigued by what
- I see. But I have little experience in the field and could use some help. I am
- a college sophomore who works for a professor at Brown University. We keep a
- biographical database of about 100,000 people on a DEC PDP minicomputer. Much
- data come from standard reference sources such as Who's Who, Who Was Who,
- American Men and Women of Science, to name a few. Currently, data is extracted
- by hand--people look at the books, copy down the pertinent information and
- later enter it by keyboard into the database. I think that there must be a
- better way. And from what I've been reading in PC Magazine and other places,
- that way might be CD-ROM. The problem is I don't know much about the technology
- (and my boss knows even less). My specific questions are: (1) What kinds of
- CD-ROM systems work with the new IBM PS/2 line, specifically, the Model 60 and
- 80. (2) How do I find out what reference works are on CD-ROM? (3) And finally,
- what retrieval methods are used to extract data from CD-ROM stored information
- to data files stored on hard disk? I hope my questions don't show too much
- ignorance on my part. I'd appreciate any information you might be able to
- provide. Good luck to this SIG!

- The quick answer is, unfortunately, "no." We use Palantir OCR devices, which
- can accept 300 dot-per-inch images from a variety of digitizers (Fujitsu makes

- As I'm sure you know, there are several OCR machines that do a good job on

- the cost of publishing on paper alone must account for a large portion of the
- current price.
- Furthermore, an electronic NGEM could be updated easily and frequently.
- There are also some who treasure much in the previous editions, in spite of
- outdated scholarship; some of the writing is a joy to read on its own. There
- would be no reason NOT to include all or at least selected portions of the
- treasured previous editions on a CD ROM.
- Because NGEM is so heavily text-based, a Hyperware edition would really
- be a whole different kind of resource. Anyone who could influence the current
- publishers of NGEM (Brittanica, I believe) would be doing a lot of music lovers
- a huge favour ....

- Your message garbled the capacity of the 5-1/4" drive ... could you repeat it?
- I work in an advertising typography studio in Toronto. We are running several
- terminals on a Multiset III with an 80 meg hard drive. The system is up 24
- hours a day, five days a week. We've been toying with WORM ... since the disks
- themselves are so cheap, it seems to make sense to use as storage. It's a nice
- feature that all versions of a file are there permanently because sometimes
- when we do changes, a customer decides the earlier version was better ... and
- we have redo everything! Something like a 250 meg drive would keep us going for
- a couple of months or more. Are the disks themselves inexpensive, ie, under $50
- each?

- Sounds like the first place to start looking is hand-held scanners which can
- import typeset text into a PC. That would eliminate a good deal of your current
- trouble while you wait for an enterprising soul to get around to publishing the
- databases you require. It's also the best way to keep your data current.
- Kurzweil, now a Xerox division, is the leader (I believe) in scanning
- technology and offers equipment in a range of prices.
- BTW, scanners are a hot new item which, like the fax machine, will
- quickly overwhelm everyone with their usefulness and market penetration. Among
- others, the makers of hard drives must be delighted ....

- little over year and a half following CD-ROM, I feel like an old timer. But

- Carol, I read this message after I read your reply to mine (and after I sent my
- reply back). You seem to be in the perfect position to answer my questions.
- Working in a small hospital like mine, I have very limited access to any good
- information. Even with access to Index Medicus (which I do not have), or use
- of an online database search, which I also do not have, I only get a literature
- citation, or perhaps a one paragraph abstract. Getting the actual journal
- article is a major chore, so the question usually goes unanswered. Now, I'm
- sure there could be a better way. I have seen the Iowa System, which contains
- a year's worth of journal articles on pharmacy-related topics. A one year
- subscription costs several hundred dollars, and fits in a shoe box (it is
- microfiche). This is a FULLTEXT product - I can read the entire article. A
- library/pharmacy/pharmacy school can keep up to date on all information for a
- few hundred dollars a year. What if such a fulltext product were on CD-ROM,
- and could do the searching for you?? Even a small hospital's library could
- afford the investment for such a product, along with the MEDLINE CD-ROM, Index
- Medicus, or whatever.
-
- You are a professional in the medical library business. Does this sound like
- it makes sense, or am I off base? How would something like this get started?
-
- Thanks for your help.

- To produce color VideoWorks II movies for CD ROM, you need basically the same
- tools you use to produce them currently... a good monitor, and a Mac II, with
- oodles of memory. A really fat Hard Disk will probably be helpful for
- accumulating material, like a CDC Wren 300 meg drive or the like, and something
- like a Meridien CD Simulator (don't buy one, but rent time or use one at your
- publishing house) can help evaluate performance (there is definitely a
- different "feel" using a CD than using a hard disk).
-
- If you can, take a look at the Discovery Systems Macintosh CD ROM sampler. It
- has got lots of videoworks, both color & B&W, samples.

- Sorry I can't help you on your particular question about the PC-SIG PD CD ROM,
- but I am curious about your evaluation of it... since we're looking at putting
- out a product in the same genre, except on the Macintosh. One of our options
- is to press it in ISO/High Sierra format rather than the Mac's proprietary
- "HFS" format, which would allow PC-based BBS's to read it directly. Would you
- have any interest in a disc like this? What BBS software do you use, and how
- much of a pain is it to get it to work with the PC SIG CD ROM online? Do the
- PC SIG folks impose any restrictions on how long you can put it online, etc.?

- Welcome to the CDROM forum! I'm always glad to see fellow Mac users here,
- although I imagine we'll be (relatively) scarce for a while, until Apple's
- drive is shipping in quantity. I'd recommend visiting the software library
- DL1, and doing a BROwse to look for the press releases about Apple's drive and
- the existing (and potential) applications. Yes, as the name implies, CD ROM is
- a Read Only Media, but that may not be as limiting as it sounds, given
- sophisticated software. CD ROM won't take the place of hard disks, but it will
- certainly "lighten the load" by allowing for storage of archival or external
- data in a separate device.

-
- I, too look forward to the increase in the "digitizing" of the world that CD
- ROM will help bring. In addition, the large amount of "real estate" (free
- space) present on CD ROM, compared to current storage and distribution media,
- offers publishers the opportunity to include data in multiple forms, such as
- speech-digitized in addition to text-only, on one disc.

- Yes, I, too would like very much to be able to browse several years' worth of
- some of my favorite forums (mostly Mac-ish, in my case) on a CD ROM.
- Unfortunately, I expect that it will be some time until we see the commercial
- forums regularly publishing in this media, for a number of reasons, mostly
- copyright-related. It mostly settles down to a question of who owns the
- content of the forums, and whether the systems need to get permission from each
- message-poster for publication. In addition, they might perceive such an
- archive as a disincentive to log on and spend your $ online, so] they might
- hold back from offering this sort of compilation.
-
- I suspect that we will see much sooner CD ROM-based compilations of the PUBLIC
- messages posted on public forums such as UseNet. Messages are posted here with
- the expectation that they will be automatically reproduced thousands of times
- across the world, as part of the message distribution network (the same applies
- to FidoNet). A publisher willing to bring a disc of these messages to market
- at a low price, with good searching and indexing tools, would probably be able
- to do so without objection from users of the networks.
-
- If you had such a collection, what would you use it for? What kind of searches
- would you want to do? Would you like it to be edited/filtered down so that the
- "trivial" messages, as well as incorrect ones, were removed or invisible?

- Don't make the assumption that a publication on CD ROM is going to retail for
- less than the same product on paper. Even though per-copy production costs may
- be lower, pre-production, data conversion, and mastering costs can be
- significant, and a publisher uncertain about a new medium may try to recoup
- these costs out of the first few years' worth of publication. In addition, a
- smaller # of copies can go out, since fewer people can read CD ROM's than can
- read books, and book publication must continue (for at least the forseeable
- future).
-
- The overriding factor may be the ownership of the information. If a company
- has a monopoly on a certain set of data, why should they lower the price at the
- same time that they add value (better searching, faster access, perhaps
- multimedia) to it? For example, I believe that the Oxford English Dictionary
- is available on CD ROM for the same price as on paper... about $1200. Why
- should they lower the price?
-
- It will be interesting to see what the availability of less-expensive
- publishing media does to the cost of information in general...

- You have just identified one of the advantages of write-once (and, in the
- future, write-many) optical technologies: they make possible samizdat editions
- of special-interest databases that a publisher would find it uneconomical to
- produce. With a write-once drive attached to a PC with a biggish magnetic disk,
- production of 100-MB rapidly searchable full-text databases is no particular
- problem.

- The Grove Dictionary is a 20-volume reference work considered to be the most
- up-to-date English-language source for music history, biography and practice.
- The market is a trifle narrow, but no narrower than that for the Oxford English
- Dictionary. Any serious music scholar, critic or student needs access to
- Grove. The audio selections you mentioned would certainly enhance the work,
- which now uses printed musical examples, accessible only to those who can
- easily read music. For your information, it is published by -- I forgot! It
- used to be Macmillan, but I wonder whether it hasn't seen a change in
- distributors in the USA. -- Ed S.

- Can you tell me more about write-once disks? I take it that they would require
- a different kind of drive. I don't think we'll want to put any of the database
- on CD-ROM, but possible, in conjunction with a scanner, writeonce disks might

- I ran a series of bbs's starting in Chicago in 1981, moving to washington dc in
- 1984 and now in Miami in 1988. I never edited to contents of my open access
- system during all those years except for obscenities. HOWEVER, I guess I would
- have to agree that allthe "Hi, Bobs" would have to go. As to technical
- editing, who would do it? I find that a lot of arcane things I know for a
- certainty are regularly disputed on some of the forums I watch. I'd rather
- have the whole thing since a search wuld tend to filter out the chaff. As to
- copyrights, I can't believe that we haven't tacitly or expressly given any
- rights we might have to our thoughts here to compuserve. What would I use it
- for? I'm an AutoCAD dealer who frequently finds himself in over his head on
- some existing hardware combination whose owner wants as much salvaged as
- possible. It would be really good to look at some of the forums from a year or
- two ago to se what the available wisdom was on the subject. As to Compuserve
- not wanting to dimininsh the value of the on-line service, I suspect that they
- would not feel that year or two old forums would competer with current stuff.
- I guess I'm completely convinced that this would be a good thing and feel that
- it would be an ideal cdrom application and one we should ask for. more
- ideas???

- Yeah, it seems easier sometimes to communicate electronically. We can answer
- communications at our own time, instead of having to find a time that is
- mutually convenient.
-
- No, my stuff is not in the bags any longer...It is in three piles on the floor.
- I started to organize yesterday, stopped to read the stuff, then went and did
- something else. Check that, it looks as if the three piles have fallen over
- and melded into one mess.
-
- Significant announcements? Of course the Apple announcement was the most
- important, as Apple is the first "first tier" hardware manufacturer to get
- behind the technology. And HyperCard, even with its faults, answers many of
- the questions that face the PC world about such things as user interface and
- retrieval engines. The demo of the CD/I technology was interesting, too, if
- only to at last see something after several years of promises about this
- technology. What was most interesting about the Microsoft announcements was
- how lackluster they were: neither product represents a breakthrough in
- technology and both use the faulty BookShelf user interface. Several of the
- sessions at the show I enjoyed, such as those on "HyperMedia," "MultiMedia,"
- and Kucera's talk on the "Texture of Text."
-
- I could go on forever, but I'll leave it at that for now. I definately look
- forward to seeing the PD ROM, and am sorry I couldn't make the meeting the
- other night.

- I have a Hitachi CDR-1503S CD-ROM drive. The drive is used to read the
- information stored on CD-ROMs. CD-ROMs are 12cm circular discs that have data
- recorded on them in a series of microscopic pits spiraling down one side. The
- CD-ROM drive uses a laser to "read" the data from the CD-ROM. The method is
- very similar to audio CD players.
- The drive, including the necessary controller card, cost around $850; I can't
- give you an exact figure because I bought a package deal.

- What I am looking for are markets that haven't been filled yet, where there is
